Are there public buses in Iceland?

The public buses in Iceland are called Strætó and you will recognize them by the yellow color. If you are staying in Reykjavík you can buy a 1-3 day city pass. Strætó also travels to the main places around the country and you can check out their schedule HERE. The only downside to taking the bus in Iceland is that it’s quite expensive.

The modes of transport in Iceland are governed by the country's rugged terrain and sparse population. The principal mode of personal transport is the car. There are no public railways, although there are bus services. Transport from one major town to another, for example Reykjavík to Akureyri, may be by aeroplane on a domestic flight.

There is no hop-on / hop-off bus pass available that spans around the whole island. The bus network, however, is extensive and makes it possible to travel the whole circle.
